The MBA Personal Statement:  Your Most Important Selling Device

You probably have a school in mind for that MBA degree.  However, applying for an MBA program will require a lot from you. You cannot simply head into the program half-heartedly, because your investment will be both time and money.  So before deciding to enroll to an MBA program, you must know secure all the requirements. To get started, you need to prepare for your MBA personal statement, otherwise known as your application essay or statement of purpose, and your Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).

An MBA personal statement should not be considered trivial in the MBA application process.  Write several drafts of the application essay before you can consider it perfect for submission.  In your MBA personal statement, use the first person so words will flow more naturally, as they reveal who you really are.  After all, this is an MBA personal statement (emphasis on “Personal”), it must show what you plan on becoming and what you plan to contribute in the future.  Your MBA personal statement should not be repeated versions of documents that you will be submitting anyway.  For example, your GMAT score need not be mentioned in your MBA personal statement.  Remember that it is more of a statement of purpose, rather than your transcript of records or resume.  It is a chance to tell the admissions committee what YOU are all about.

Why is an MBA personal statement so important?  First of all, this MBA essay will be the key to getting into an MBA program.  With a competent MBA education, you can have more options–you maybe be able to apply to top corporations or top consulting companies or even top-tier non-profit/volunteer organizations.  You’ll never know, but you may even become a CEO of a Fortune 100 company.  The MBA personal statement leads you to this possibility.  Admission committees will be looking for persons who also have a personality fit for a leadership position.  The MBA personal statement can also be viewed as your sales pitch.  Sometimes such an MBA essay will require some perking up, with interesting anecdotes that truly show who you are as a person, as a potential leader, and potential member of the corporate world.  The anecdotes will also serve as a way to make your essay more personal and more engrossing to read.  You wouldn’t want the reader to drop your MBA personal statement before finishing the first paragraph, but you must stay away from very controversial claims.

The good thing about the MBA personal statement is that it can be written in a wide variety of ways.
You must write it with the intent to highlight your best qualities while still remaining true to who you really are.  Still, it must be grammatically correct and spelling must be perfect to show that you are meticulous, organized, and competent.  Your MBA personal statement is what will make you stand out among thousands of applicants.
