The demands of school are hard to get through for some students, and even the well-performing ones encounter the occasional blockades on their path. As such, many books and articles on self-improvement techniques aimed at students are already out in the market. We, however, would like to help you get through college or graduate studies in a different manner by showing some of the unproductive practices that make a student inefficient. If you find yourself guilty of committing some of these habits more than a few times, then it’s high time to rethink your studying strategies.

* Unsuccessful students dwell on mediocrity.

Nowadays, most students usually pray for a passing grade or score, instead of excelling. Students’ calendars are always crammed with deadlines, exams, and events that most students tend to spread themselves too thinly so as to be able to do them all. Setting priorities will help start one on the road to success. The next would be to exert your best efforts. Say, if you’ve turned down a weekend with friends to write a term paper, make use of the time to present your best work. You’ll feel it was worth the sacrifice of a fun weekend if you earn high points for an excellent job. Though mediocrity may be prevalent among students, raise the bar a little and strive to be more than the norm. Aiming for excellence and getting it not only make you stand out, but give you better opportunities in school and in the future.

* Unsuccessful students act impulsively.

Though panic and adrenaline surges can bring out the best in people in some instances, choices made in a rush often lead to uneventful results. One might end up with a bigger problem instead of a remedy for it. Decisions should always be made after careful analysis of the situation. One must learn how to discern which situation needs more time for critical analysis and one that can be solved in an instant. One must be able to consider the weight of a topic at hand such as a research proposal that will merit funding from a sponsor. Consulting other people such as faculty and other experts may help you form an educated decision.

* Unsuccessful students always procrastinate.

Some students brag about performing well under pressure of deadlines. However, this is often used as an excuse by students who’d rather put off for later what they can and should do at the moment. This practice often leads to sloppy work or output that could have been better if enough time was spent on it. One’s personal lifestyle can also be burdened by this practice, such as putting off doing the laundry or arranging the stacks of reading material in one’s room. Acting now by starting the clean up and arranging your stuff not only leaves you with more room to walk in but can also help improve your academic performance.

* Unsuccessful students focus too much on failures and negativity.

Some students take their losses too seriously, developing low self-esteems that eventually affect their performance. However, students need to be reminded that professors and mentors do not give low grades or negative feedback just so they can make one feel bad. One must be able to perceive low grades and problem areas as points for improvement. Looking at trials as challenges not only gives one a boost in self-esteem but also develops one’s capacity and intellect to get past these trials. Learn from a poorly received paper by analyzing what made it deserve that grade. After careful review, you’ll be able to avoid these mistakes the next time.

* Unsuccessful students don’t see the bigger picture.

Most students only anticipate getting to the next step, and thus only aim to get passing grades and just graduate. However, for people who are ready to test their potentials, setting goals and undertaking the necessary steps can help them achieve their dreams. High school students can start by performing well in their academics as good grades and pristine records can get them into the best colleges. Getting into the best colleges isn’t the end though, as impressive GPAs still need to be earned especially for people looking forward to graduate, medical, law, or MBA school. Though one can weasel their way in with an exceptional personal essay, one’s undergrad GPA would still figure in the judging process. Grades may not be the sole measure of one’s success in life, but having excellent ones would definitely be of help in realizing one’s full potential.
